Westbrook Pegler recalls William H. Lewis football pioneer
The essay profiles William H. Lewis of Boston, a Black former Amherst and Harvard football captain, recounting his rise from Virginia slave roots to notable All-America recognition and leadership under eras of heavy racial barriers. It contrasts early football toughness with Hyde Park era attitudes and laments enduring New England hypocrisy toward race.
