Coast Guard units chased a fleeing bootlegger across a field near Miami as a sheriff’s posse, led by Cmdr Norman Horton, closed in. The airborne pursuit involved a helicopter and fast boats during prohibition days.
Hal Boyle recalls a tense scene with his daughter Tracy and their dog Amos. Tracy pets and hugs passing animals despite danger, while Amos nips only when she steps on his turf. A British doctor patches Tracy’s bruise as the father weighs duty against a child’s stubborn love. Amos’s true nature remains unknowable.
The sheriff reports a moonshine fugitive repeatedly diverted as Morton steered the Whitby bird, forcing the man to flee in different directions. Each time officers reached the field the escapee lay exhausted and offered no resistance to arrest.

Treasury urged investors to retain bonds as advantageous. It cited a $100 bond costing $75 with a $79.20 redemption value after 244 years, noting holding to maturity would yield $26.80 more, about 3.28 percent on the $79.20.
Seaton of Arkansas outlined how the government would use existing law and the Defense Production Act to address the oil emergency. He noted Europe may receive up to 40 percent of its normal petroleum needs in the first quarter and that voluntary price accords are now barred except among defense contractors for military production.
