Roosevelt statement harms British prestige in neutral lands
Life Magazine says Churchill revealed in a secret Commons session that Japan’s ambassador Shigemitsu sought reassurance after Roosevelt’s May 1941 warning that Nazi sinkings outpaced shipbuilding. Churchill’s June 23 1941 address noted heavy losses and Britain's push to cut manpower by 500,000 to increase escort and shipping capacity.

Address on Atlantic Battle Critics Overestimated Forces
In his remarks the speaker notes that Britons and likely Germans overestimated Allied strength at 4,000,000 while the true total was about half that. He apologizes for harsh language used toward colleagues and says if we win no one will care, but if we lose there will be no lads to care.

Translation of Jap Flash Is Reported
Washington February 11 Congressional investigators heard a woman translator in the Navy Department rough translate a Japanese message on December 6 1941 that warned of a Pearl Harbor attack. Senator Ferguson pressed Capt Alwin D Kramer who said he could not remember seeing the note until December 8 and that garbled phrases were cleaned up in days of work. He admitted such a translation might have tipped off analysts if the policy context had been known. Safford testified Kramer told Knox in 1943 the message warned of a sunrise attack on Pearl Harbor. The transcript notes a fore ign service officer overheard the remark about the 1 p m Tokyo delivery time.
