Prisoners Smoke Out Fire at Hempstead County Jail

Late Saturday night a disturbed inmate set four foam mattresses ablaze in the Hempstead County Jail. Smoke filled the fifth floor cell area delaying escape, but no one was burned and only one minor injury occurred. Officers then evacuated prisoners and later returned them to their cells. In New York, Jack Gasnick, a Manhattan plumbing supply owner, also owns 28 small land parcels taxed at $800 annually, bought at tax sales as a hobby.

Carl P. Robarts Dies at 88 in Hope Area

Carl P. Robarts, 88, longtime Hope resident and retired postal employee, died early Saturday in a local hospital. Survived by wife Ida Robarts and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Sunday at 2 p.m. at Oakcrest Chapel with Revs. Burks and Steele officiating. Interment Water Creek Cemetery. Oakcrest Funeral Home in charge.

Jessie Bearden, a former resident of Hope, died early today in a Nashville hospital. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Oakcrest Funeral Home.

Trucker Wounded as Beaumont Gunfire Flareups Continue

In Beaumont an unidentified rifle bullet struck Houston driver John Coborn as he drove under an overpass wounding him in the head and eye. Fellow driver Frank Flores of Pasadena said Coborn was unconscious in a second vehicle. hospital attendants reported guarded condition. Both men worked for Lloyd Frye Roofing Co. of Houston, hauling materials to Thibodeaux Louisiana. Fellow drivers from Texas and nearby states renewed threats to halt rolls over demands for higher freight rates faster speeds and lower diesel prices as the strike tensions persisted.

Strike Settlement Divides Nation of Truckers

The shutdown relief settlement was approved by most steel haulers locals and by potato haulers in Wisconsin and Maine. Some Georgia leaders urged men back to work while others pressed for lower fuel costs, with meetings in Minnesota and Ohio showing split loyalties among independents and unionizers.
