The Associated Press reports warmer weather for Arkansas with temperatures rising from 51 at Harrison to 66 at Texarkana. Highs today and Tuesday are expected in the 60s to low 70s, continuing a warming trend across the state.
The Hope Star notes a high pressure area over the southern U S forecast to remain for several days with generally fair weather and no precipitation through Tuesday. Overnight lows 30s to mid 40s with city and regional temperatures listed. postage and subscription rates, staff obits, and advertising offices are detailed for Hope and surrounding counties.
Late Saturday night a disturbed inmate set four foam mattresses ablaze in the Hempstead County Jail. Smoke filled the fifth floor cell area delaying escape, but no one was burned and only one minor injury occurred. Officers then evacuated prisoners and later returned them to their cells. In New York, Jack Gasnick, a Manhattan plumbing supply owner, also owns 28 small land parcels taxed at $800 annually, bought at tax sales as a hobby.
Funeral services were held for Rosa Lee Johnson 71 in Nashville with burial at Fellowship Cemetery. Survivors include three sons, three daughters, siblings and many grandchildren. Herbert C Spradlin 66 died in Hot Springs and was buried in DeAnn cemetery after services at Prescott United Methodist Church. Milbur Phillips 83 died in Tyler with service at Sweethome Church and burial at Sweethome cemetery. survivors include wife, three sons, two daughters, siblings, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Haynie Smith 32 of 1 Dorado was killed when his pickup overturned on a curve near Camden Sunday. He was thrown from the vehicle and pinned under wreckage. Plus brief items from Washington and New York on Nixon sermon and Leontyne Price birthday recital. Nine percent of Arkansas public water system users drink questionable water. Over 100000 of 1.1 million served by 136 systems failed bacteriological tests.

Carl P. Robarts, 88, longtime Hope resident and retired postal employee, died early Saturday in a local hospital. Survived by wife Ida Robarts and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Sunday at 2 p.m. at Oakcrest Chapel with Revs. Burks and Steele officiating. Interment Water Creek Cemetery. Oakcrest Funeral Home in charge.
Jessie Bearden, a former resident of Hope, died early today in a Nashville hospital. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Oakcrest Funeral Home.
In Beaumont an unidentified rifle bullet struck Houston driver John Coborn as he drove under an overpass wounding him in the head and eye. Fellow driver Frank Flores of Pasadena said Coborn was unconscious in a second vehicle. hospital attendants reported guarded condition. Both men worked for Lloyd Frye Roofing Co. of Houston, hauling materials to Thibodeaux Louisiana. Fellow drivers from Texas and nearby states renewed threats to halt rolls over demands for higher freight rates faster speeds and lower diesel prices as the strike tensions persisted.
The shutdown relief settlement was approved by most steel haulers locals and by potato haulers in Wisconsin and Maine. Some Georgia leaders urged men back to work while others pressed for lower fuel costs, with meetings in Minnesota and Ohio showing split loyalties among independents and unionizers.
