Wholesale market reports show hog futures and cattle prices rising with strong demand in Chicago and Kansas City. New York stocks opened higher led by New York Central amid proxy fight tension, while rail, chemicals, electronics and building materials shared in broader gains.
New York cotton futures held steady amid buying on trade and commission activity. The lightening spot section markets and rising government loan stock holdings spurred futures demand with March and later months showing active switching. Prices advanced 10 to 42 cents per bale from the prior close with March at 34.35, May 94.40 and July 34.28.
New crop wheat deliveries advanced on a mixed market amid dry Southwest weather and cooler forecasts. Soybeans led gains in old crop months, with Japan importing 670000 bushels overnight. Feed grains lagged as corn and rye moved modestly, while cash wheat and barley values varied across grades and seeds held near nominal ranges.
Storm Whaley former KUOA manager may join Dr John Tyler Caldwell’s University of Arkansas staff in Fayetteville. Caldwell said he discussed the possibility with Whaley but nothing definite was settled. Whaley is administrative aide to U S Representative J W Trimble in Washington D C.
In Washington a Democrat-leaning tax advocate urged a general personal tax cut after dawn drafts of a bill moved by the Republican-controlled House Ways and Means Committee. Several GOP members rejected the idea though some signaled possible changes. A $100 exemption increase would cut federal revenue by about 2.14 billion annually, while supporters project broader tax relief. The panel previously defeated a motion to add the increase on a party-line vote.
Relief rolls in northeast Arkansas show about 1300 jobless farm workers seeking aid. About 255 families applied at State Welfare Department offices in Lepanto and Marked Tree, while about 1000 asked Tuesday as offices opened in Poinsett County towns. Welfare officials say roughly five percent were denied due to sufficient resources. First foodstuffs from the federal surplus program are to arrive next week, including shortening cheese dry milk and butter.
