Vietnam peace talks amid U S plans for new military ventures
Communist delegates at the 144th session accused President Nixon of preparing new military adventures in Vietnam by boosting air power and stationing three aircraft carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin while Viet Cong officials echoed the charge. The U S delegate William Porter called Thuy's remarks nauseating and said a neutral visit to prison camps could reveal prisoners’ conditions without exposing camp locations. Porter refused to set a date for the next meeting until he gauges the antiwar gathering's atmosphere in Versailles.
