Senate and House pass key 1966 consumer bills with narrow votes
The 1966 Senate approved six measures including highway safety by a 171 to 9 margin and the House followed with a 300 to 8 vote after committee watering down. The interest disclosure bill, touted as a strong consumer bill, faced clashes in the House Banking Committee over annual percentage disclosures and revolving charges before narrowly advancing. The account notes that final votes hid the true strength of industry opposition and that roll call would have altered records.
