Former Arkansas lawmaker Allen D. Shelton dies at 75

Allen D. Shelton, who represented Poinsett County in the Arkansas House from 1925 through 1930, died in a Hot Springs hospital Sunday at age 75. He later served as city attorney in 1947 and 1958, then opened a private law practice.

Five Drowned When Car Plunged Into Bayou Meta

Five persons from Lonoke County drowned when a car left Arkansas 31 and plunged into Bayou Meto two miles south of Lonoke. Victims identified as Shirley and Carolyn Yancey both 19 and 17, Nathaniel Spring 18, Johnny Walker 18, James Dodeson 25. Driver presumed Ernest Dode son. Two injured survived with minor injuries.

Five convicts escape Arkansas prison farms weekend

J Marlar 36 of Rosston Nev ada County Jerrel Marlar is named among four others who escaped Cummins and Tucker Prison Farms over the weekend. Ernest Tunstill 22 of Bay Billy Marvel 20 of Pine Bluff and James Smith 25 of Blytheville are listed as Sunday escapees. Joe H Merritt 26 of Little Rock reportedly escaped from Tucker Saturday. Hope High Observes Safety Week February Event Schedule

Hope High students observe Safety Week February 6 to 10 with activities led by Fred O. Ellis and guest Don Griscom. Events include driving safety contests, a film and braking demo, police car checks, a safety quiz in English, slogan contest, and a Friday assembly with cash prizes for winners and class percentages on the quiz. Phillips Revenue Inspector Fired Sparks resignations in Helena

W D Kizer, Phillips County revenue inspector for six years, was notified by telephone that he was fired. N S Hawley, personnel director, issued the dismissal. Two longtime employees, Mrs Thodas Jordan and Mrs Faye McGrew, resigned in protest of what they called an injustice to their former boss.

Senator Robert F Kennedy plans talks with the White House and State Department after Newsweek cited a Paris visit in which a French official carried a Hanoi peace feeler. Kennedy declined comment until consultations with officials. The report notes other peace signals from Hanoi and Cairo as U N sources discuss possible talks while military officials note rising U S Vietnam losses and shifting Soviet arms aid. Kennedy just returned from a European trip calling the coming weeks critical for peace efforts.

Minister Found Shot to Death in West Memphis Cab

The Rev. Tom Martin Garey a 40 year old taxi driver and part time minister was found shot in his cab in West Memphis Arkansas He had been shot in the back of the head with a .22 caliber weapon Police suspected robbery as a possible motive though about $100 in his wallet was missing while cash tucked in his shirt remained.

Grant to State College for Education Fellowships

A $123,000 grant from the Department of Health Education and Welfare will aid State College of Arkansas. Funds will support fellowships and traineeships in special education and strengthen the department, a school official said.

Hope Guard Unit paid $25,676 in 1966 payroll

The 55 members of the Army National Guard unit at Hope Com pany B First Battalion 153rd Infantry received wages totaling $25,676.64 in 1966 including pay for 12 weekend drills and the two week summer camp at Fort Chaffee in August. Several members left for basic training at Fort Polk, La., beginning January 9 and January 30.

Fulbright Drops Push for Rusk Testimony at Hearing

Senate Foreign Relations chair J W Fulbright said he has all but given up hope Secretary of State Dean Rusk will testify at open hearings on world policies. Rusk twice declined specific dates citing press of business after rough Vietnam questions, though he has testified in a closed session. Fulbright said he will not press if Rusk refuses, aiming to learn where U S policies are headed.

Beth Lawrence Wins Joe Amour Award at Hope High

Beth Lawrence, a Hope High School senior and National Honor Society member, received the second quarterly Joe Amour Award in a chapel assembly. She serves as secretary of the Student Council and chaired the Teacher Appreciation Day project. The award is voted by a four-teacher and four-student committee.

All Around Town notes from Talbot Feild of Texarkana remind Hope Rotary Clubs birthday on February 10 and Feild as a charter member and former secretary. Rev. Robert W. U S troops have opened a large ground offensive in War Zone C against Viet Cong bastions as chemical defoliation efforts extend into the southern DMZ. Air and ground actions include B52 raids, 565 combat sorties, and clashes with MIGs near Hanoi.

Trooper Hurt in Accident Near Huntsville

State Trooper Bill Moore escaped serious injury after his car left Arkansas 16 south of Huntsville while pursuing a vehicle. He reported being shot at near the Madison Newton county line, received treatment, and was released from a Huntsville hospital. Roadblocks were set up but operators did not appear.
