Northwest market notes cattle hogs and lambs at St. Louis yards

At the St. Louis market the USDA report shows hogs 19,000 head, the largest since Dec. 27, with barrows and gilts down about 1.0 per cwt from Friday. Lightweights 78 to 100 lower, sows and boars 25 to 50 lower. Mixed lots 180 to 230 pounds at 12.60 to 13.25, 200 to 225 pounds around 13.60, 230 to 270 pounds 21.50 to 12.95, 270 to 415 pounds mostly 11.00 to 11.78. Cattle 8,000 with calves 600. little activity on steers and heifers. Demand weak for canners and cutters, bulls 12.10 to 14.50. Sheep 1,800 with a few 19.50 lambs, otherwise quiet. Market tone mixed with some prices steady to firmer on select lots.

Freezing Rain Threatens Southwest After Severe Blizzard

United Press reports another round of freezing rain threatens the Southwest after a five day blizzard dumped up to 30 inches of snow. At least 30 dead across Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico as crews clear streets in Plainview, Amarillo, and Lubbock. A bus driver in Tucumcari walked 10 miles to summon help for 13 passengers amid deep drifts.

Arkansas Death Toll Reaches Fourteen This Week

The Associated Press reports Arkansas counted fourteen violent deaths during the week ending Sunday midnight. Five were traffic fatalities, one suicide, one accidental fall, and one undetermined. In Pine Bluff a 4th year student was shot in a tavern. police booked a 42 year old man on an open charge after witnesses linked an argument to the shooting. A Creamery boy died when struck by a truck driven by his half brother near Levan ta. The driver was identified as William Ashby’s son, Leonard Hiser. Billy Melton of West Helena was shot Friday night after shooting a police officer, then advancing on the officer again. Authorities called the case "sabotage" or similarly phrased.

Police Open Fire After Man Lunges at Officer

Capt J Herschel Yaney said he fired twice into the floor before shooting at Mel ton as the youth lunged. Melton, in logging with his father, once boxed as a Mississippi Golden Gloves heavyweight before losing a leg in a traffic accident and using an artificial limb.
