Earl Page remains as bureau head with a 100 dollar monthly supplement. 26 to 3 vote. Also, a Levine bill to cancel Wright plantation state prison farm contract passed 31 to 0 with original price 367 thousand dollars and about 36 thousand interest paid.
The body of Jack Sharkey, 35, a Little Rock oil company employee, was found shot in an automobile near Cotton Plant Arkansas. A bullet wound in the head and a pistol on the seat were found. An inquest was scheduled for Monday afternoon. Sharkey came from Fort Worth Texas where relatives live.
Berlin reports the government issued a public safety decree that drastically curtails freedom of the press and the right to public assembly despite protests from German press associations.
Cranwell bulletin reports Squadron Leader O. B. Gay ford and Flight Lieutenant G. E. Nicholetts taking off from Cranwell to South Africa in a bid for a world record long distance non-stop flight. Lympne notes Captain J. A. Mollison also departed on a 4,306 mile staged flight to Brazil across the southern Atlantic.
Hempstead county automobile tags went on sale in Hempstead and Washington. Sheriff John L. Wilson announced 134 registrations by noon Monday in Hempstead and 16 in Washington. Final deadline is Friday February 10 after a 10 day grace period from February 1. A four year test for the second reduction makes older models eligible for the quarter rate, with general reduction at one half of last year's charges.
Washington report on the senate judiciary committee session reexamining David S. Barry's Outlook magazine claim that some congress members sell votes. Barry testified there were few crooks in congress and referenced past anti-lobby inquiries tied to Thad Caraway era.
Conway Arkansas George Shaw vice president Carl Henderson assistant cashier and Philip Yeager Jr of the closed Bank of Conway held to appear before the grand jury after arrest Monday on state banking law violations. Bank examiner's report cites shortages irregularities and discrepancies totaling about 61 000.
Texarkana Miller circuit court opened James Crabtree 54 a former convict to trial for murder in the October double killing of Deputy Sheriffs Melvin Brackman and J.C. Crain both 43 who confronted a truck believed to carry liquor. Officers say Crabtree admitted the killings claiming self defense against hijackers.
The Weather Man forecasts a cold wave for Tuesday in Hope and surrounding areas. A Monday night AP forecast warned of sleet or snow in Fayetteville with lows of 10 to 15 degrees. Stockmen are advised to shelter cattle as the cold front moves in.
The condition of Mrs. John H. Dawson of near Stephens, mother of John Dawson a well known Hope man, was slightly improved Monday after a stroke over a week ago left her critically ill. Relatives from town visited her over the weekend.
Bill Chambers a 25 year old Negro pleaded guilty to petit larceny after being found hidden in Landes Supply storeroom and escaping a pistol shot. He was fined 10 dollars plus costs and jailed one hour. Simms and Cantley, Hope Negroes, face continued charges for stealing over 100 pounds of chickens from farmers. Cantley free on 110 dollar bond, Simms jailed at Washington. Fred Jones charged with assault and battery was fined 25 dollars and costs. Frank Smith fined 5 dollars for disturbing the peace. John Kendall pleaded guilty to drunkenness and was fined 10 dollars and costs.
A New York report by Dr. George K. Pratt urges unemployed husbands to leave home for several hours daily to avoid increasing family tensions. He outlines four rules: get away from home, increase neighborliness and recreation, develop a personal hobby, and preserve health to handle added burdens.
W. E. Bruner & Sons Inc of Heber Springs Arkansas announces the purchase of Ivory Handle Company forming Bruner Ivory Handle, a 45 year old firm with national export reach. The new unit will operate from Hope Arkansas starting February 1 with payroll rising from 40 to 70 and Bruner transferring personnel and equipment from Heber Springs. C. F. Erwin of Ivory Handle will join Bruner at Heber Springs to learn the processes. Officials named include J. D. Barlow J. R. Henry J. F. Gorin and Lloyd Spencer.
Federal crop loan program moves forward after President approval. Secretary Hyde will decide on a possible 30 percent acreage cut in exchange for aid. Disbursement machinery starts Monday with regional offices in Memphis St Louis Minneapolis Salt Lake City and Washington. Last year loans averaged 125 with 87 632 borrowers and no prep fees for applications.
