Death toll in Ireland rises in Belfast bloodshed
BELFAST AP The death toll from Belfast’s violent week rose to 10 as a gas station attendant died in hospital after being shot. Six Catholics died in shootings by British troops and three Protestants were killed, bringing total deaths since last Monday to 20. Catholic leaders demanded a government inquiry into the killings, while sources said William Whitelaw would seek more troops from Prime Minister Heath as 17,000 soldiers man the province. Sniper fire persisted Sunday night in Belfast with army patrols present and a naked Protestant man’s body found in a river.
