Outboard engine title certificate bill passes house unanimously

The Arkansas House approved H.B. 169 by 76 to 0 to require title certificates and engine serial numbers when registering outboard motors. The bill heads to the Senate, after support from a local editor who championed the measure following a stolen 90hp engine incident at Millwood Lake.

Arkansas boat bill moves from House to Senate on silent governor

Rep. Larry Patterson said H B 169 has 76 votes in the Arkansas House with 24 nonvotes and will go to the Senate for readings and committee referral. Gov. Pryor has not stated a position, though Patterson suspects silent opposition from department heads and predicts no veto if the bill passes the Senate.

Editor threatens 1978 petition on outboard engine laws

The editor warns that unless Rep Patterson's bill passes this 1977 General Assembly a state wide petition will be launched to place an outboard engine title certificate measure on the November 1978 ballot as an Initiated Act. The ultimatum has already been delivered to legislators in the January 27 edition.

Flu outbreak reported in eleven Arkansas counties

The Arkansas Health Department said there is a flu like illness outbreak in eleven counties including Pulaski Jefferson Drew Lonoke Prairie Jackson Craighead Poinsett Lawrence Lee and Union. Tests were underway and results could come late this week or early next. The disease is described as fairly mild and may spread to other areas while nearby states report type B flu.

Two policemen shot in Texarkana fatality reported

Texarkana police officer Lt. Ed Worrell died at a hospital after being shot in the back during a burglary call at Howard's Discount Store. Officer James Clark was in guarded condition. Three youths from Elgin, Illinois, were taken into custody. The FBI offered assistance.

Kidnapped Memphis Boy To Return Home Today

A 4 year old Memphis boy will be returned to his mother today after being taken Wednesday by live in babysitter Peggy Wells. Babysitter Mrs Larlow Julson was arrested in Little Rock on kidnapping charges carrying a penalty of one to five years. Police traced the pair to the Greyhound station and Salvation Army center where Julson was apprehended.
