Folk origins of dog breeds traced through history
The article discusses how many modern dog breeds arose from community needs and shared ideas, not just deliberate breeding. It distinguishes “aflor made” regional types like the Irish Wolfhound and Sealyham Terrier from American examples such as the Coonhound and Chesapeake Bay Dog, noting that most of today’s roughly 250 purebreds originated as folk creations later refined by breeders seeking useful traits. It also includes a ratio analogy about beef cuts to illustrate natural distribution.
