Washington notes fuel shortage fears as Lewis signals possible independent action to pay miners from a $50.9 million welfare fund. UMW chief says he would not contradict the move, while industry operators warn of an April 1 strike by 400,000 United Mine Workers.
Gerhart Eisler known as No 1 Communist in the United States was held without bail at Ellis Island on a deportation warrant. His arrest followed Judge Morris denying a retrial on concealing Communist affiliations when applying for passports in 1945. Eisler faces up to five years’ prison and a $9,000 fine if convicted. Meanwhile, a 1947 coal contract dispute over an independent plan for employee benefits surfaces as unions press for enforcement, with trustees debating a broad pension and disability scheme funded by a 10 cent royalty per ton of coal produced. The talks, secret until now, involve Lewis for the union Ezra Van Horn for operators and Thomas Murray as neutral. Some operators speculate the notice hints at Taft-Hartley law issues as the contract could end as of April 1 unless negotiations resume.
