The Senate approved the 1.05 billion Appalachia aid bill aimed at boosting 11 states, with House action expected soon. Speaker McCormack said it may be the first major 89th Congress bill to reach President Johnson, who urged quick action. Senate vote 62 to 22 after two days of debate.
The Hempstead Nevada Regional Library receives a generous check from The Star amounting to 234.34 dated December 31. The funds come from the Kennedy memorial book sale profits after costs and transport, with staff time donated. Editor Alex H. Washburn also contributes 45.67 to subscriptions for nine magazines for Hempstead Memorial Hospital.

Senator John L. McClellan of Arkansas voted against the administration's 1.09 billion Appalachia Region aid bill as the Senate passed it 62 to 22. He urged inclusion of a segment from the Ozarks but failed to win approval.
The Faubus administration sped the $150 million bond bill through the Senate by a 24 to 8 vote, then faced a cautious House path as the Revenue and Taxation Committee prepared to review House versions and a companion gas tax bill. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr remained jailed to dramatize his civil rights struggle as followers plan new demonstrations in Selma and surrounding counties. About 250 Negroes and several white volunteers were jailed after the march for voting rights. many posted 200 dollar bonds and were released. Simultaneous county marches were organized in Perry, Marengo, and possibly Lowndes as a voter registration drive spreads from Selma.
The Hempstead County Farm Bureau opened its 1965 membership drive with a February 1 breakfast at Town and Country Restaurant. Randolph Webb of Mineral Springs spoke on Farm Bureau policies. President Lester Kent urged farmers and agriculture fans to join as Farm Bureau Week runs February 16 to push county quotas.
The Hempstead County Republican Women's Club elected officers for 1965 at a regular meeting. Officers include President Mrs Clyde Fouse, Vice President Mrs James Branch, Secretary Mrs Paul Rawson, Treasurer Mrs Robert L Moers, Membership Chairman Mrs Lynn Harris, Publicity Chairman Mrs Paul W Klipsch, Program Chairman Mrs Haskell Jones, Finance Chairman Mrs Emily Prescott, and Mrs Leona Troxell of Rose Bud. State President Mrs Troxell and Evelyn Elman spoke on Arkansas politics. The club will plant Red bud trees with Hope Garden Club and will meet the fourth Tuesday each month at 7 30 in the Chamber of Commerce Community Room.
