Tarbondile Pa February 2. State police guard over a three block area after a mine cave-in wrecks 12 homes in what is described as the worst mine disaster in the area’s history. Four persons injured. Residents reported many fled to neighbors or hotels as most of the town’s 90,000 ventilation system failed and a hillside collapse jolted two adjacent blocks.
Washington February 2 The chairman of the National Labor Relations Board testified that the Truman administrations labor bill would override state bans on the closed shop and restore federal precedence in interstate matters. He urged a five man NLRB to replace the three member panel and cited efficiency gains. The reference to Jamestown appeared as a stray note on the first enslaved Africans brought to the United States.
Newark precinct detectives report an elderly recluse and his blind wife died about three weeks apart in a one time frame house packed with art treasures and faded belongings. The couple, Henry and Rosa Diffany, aged about 85, were found in a cluttered residence with blinds drawn since 1918.
In Bristow Oklahoma February 2, M Life began for Barkeley Burris who reunited with wife Ella Mershon after 140 venues of separation. Ella, 65, believed him dead since November 1906. They met at her front door and embraced, tears flowing as Burris learned Ella was alive in Bristow. both had assumed the other deceased. Burris and Ella plan remarriage within days, pending details. Frank Owens, Ella’s brother, helped confirm the reunion after recognizing Burris at once.
Burris, a Hale County Texas resident for 81 years, traveled alone to Bristow from Plainview with aid from locals to reunite with his wife if she desires. He was met by a reporter and police at the station. Burris, who worked odd jobs, has ties to C. H. Mershon of Bristow and to two married daughters from his second marriage. One of his two children from a previous marriage is deceased.
