Manila reports indicate nurse Olivia Jo Sophine Oswald plans to travel to the United States to confront Maj. Arthur Wermuth, with claims they were married. The American Legion urged immediate inquiry into the Veterans Administration under Gen Omar Bradley. Vice Admiral W. W. Smith told the Congressional Pearl Harbor Committee that he doubted Japan would have attacked the U S fleet if it had been stationed on the Pacific coast He argued detection would be likely during refueling and Hawaii would still be attacked from a different island. He noted Japan could have chosen Oahu or another Hawaiian isle for an amphibious strike and warned Pearl Harbor might have suffered more damage if fuel and machine shops were knocked out.
Grand Rapids pastor Frank I Siple pleaded guilty to murdering his 17 year old daughter Dorothy Ann in July 1939. He confessed to poisoning her with cyanide and enema doses, saying he did it to end her suffering. A judge remanded him for sentencing after a sanity exam request. townspeople recalled the daughter as a normal pupil and Siple faced motive questions.
Lille Rock February 1 Wyoming attorney general rules that veterans need not pay state sales tax when buying used autos from the government. The opinion was sent to Deputy Prosecutor M. Dean Merrillan.
Jonesboro, Feb 1. The disappearance of Marion Langston 19 adds to the mystery of the Newport impostor case. Marion Langston, brother of William Langston reported killed on Iwo Jima, has been missing two weeks. his mother Naomi Hendricks notes he left Seattle Jan 6. Authorities weigh that the Seattle exile may hold clues to the Newport stranger claiming to be William Langston. The Langston family says the Newport man, aged about 25, resembles Marion. they fear identity confusion between the two brothers amid ongoing investigations.
President Truman summoned the steel fact finding board and OPA chief Chester Bowles to the White House amid reports of a new settlement plan to end the 12 day old strike. Bowles cut short a South Carolina vacation while officials review a plan that may include a $2.50 per ton price rise to aid a wage agreement.
The Associated Press reports twenty ships carrying over 19,500 returnees will reach four West Coast ports today while more than 6,800 passengers depart IMN vessels at two East Coast ports. New York will see seven transports with 6,704 or so troops. Norfolk, Virginia will receive three ships with 48 troops. West Coast arrivals include San Francisco eleven ships with 8,068, Los Angeles three ships with 4,527, San Diego five ships with 6,274, Seattle one ship with 1,280. The Coast Guard’s Alaska service earned the title Godfather of Alaska.
In Stanley prison on October 2, 1943, American Chester Bennett faced imminent execution for espionage as the Japanese regime prepared to kill him and 32 others. He wrote farewell notes to his wife, learning she would soon bear his child, and expressed love as the hour of death neared.
In Chungking Chiang Kai-shek voiced hope that China can unite to form a democratic nation after 18 years of Kuomintang rule. He pledged free political activity, army nationalization, and broad reform, saying peace prevails with minor clashes only. He urged demobilization of Communists and adherence to unity conference decisions.
Ford Motor Co announces production halt across multiple plants due to a steel strike. About 18,000 workers laid off at the Rouge plant in Dearborn with 1,300 more idled at Buffalo, Chester, Chicago, Edgewater, Louisville, St Paul and Kansas City. Additional 5,680 workers affected as lines stop next week in Memphis Somerville Dallas Richmond and Long Beach.
Washington February 1 The House debated a plan to curb strikes with fierce exchanges between supporters and opponents. President Green warned chaos and injustice, while Edward A O Nea l of the American Federation urged passage to protect the public interest. House Republicans split on tightening the bill, but 258 to 14 voted to grant Case the measure immediate right of way. Some members said modifications ahead, few major changes expected.
Little Rock reports January sales tax collection totaling 31.5 million dollars, a state record. Revenue Commissioner Otho A. Cook noted the figure exceeded all prior January collections and surpassed the nearest five-year monthly peak.
London reports Foreign Secretary Bevin told the United Nations security council that Moscow and Communist party propaganda pose the real danger to world peace. He rebutted Soviet charges over British troops in Greece and urged a straight yes or no verdict on Britain’s role.
Chitwood and Minor pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the January 124 shooting of Raymond Morris in Mena. Circuit Judge E K Edwards ordered a mental evaluation for Chitwood at Little Rock state hospital with a 10 day observation window and trial set for February if sane. Minor’s tentative trial date is February 20.
