Gyp Barton, held on the $3,000 Winnfield bank robbery charge, said he would resist extradition to Louisiana. State Senator Ned Stewart, Barton's attorney, alleged jail mistreatment after he returned to Louisiana for investigation. Barton was arrested at Garland City. Neill Dies at 56 as Southern Pacific Executive

Hugh Neill an Arkansas native and longtime railroad executive died in New York after two heart attacks at age 56. Born April 17, 1876 in Batesville he joined Southern Pacific in 1905 and rose to secretary and vice president by 1925. He lived at 77 Park Avenue and is survived by two brothers Robert and Ernest and three sisters Mrs. Samuel Phillips Eleanor and Esther.

The post office and banks will close Monday for New Year observance in Hope while the business district evaluates the past year. Citizens National and First National plan holidays for employees. The post office will open 1 to 3 PM for general delivery and stamps only, with one city-carrier run and suspension of rural deliveries.

Green Purchases Old Luck Station

E. O. Green, longtime local auto repairman, leases the Gulf service station on Division Street, formerly Luck Brothers. He has worked at Broadway Service Station and garage for four years as chief mechanic and bought the Gulf station Friday from Ron McKissack, who is returning to Kilgore, Texas. Green will run a one stop service station selling Gulf oil and focusing on auto repairs.

November Retail Slump Deepens Across District Markets

The St. Louis Federal Reserve notes weakened trade in the eighth district with November wholesale and retail sales below year-ago levels except for furniture. Across iron steel glass and lumber, demand fell while cotton and rice prices pressured southern trade. Construction contracts rose 26.4 percent from October but remained 49.4 percent below November 1931. freight interchanges and barge tonnage also show mixed declines and gains.

Local Clergyman and Family Hurt in Texarkana Highway Crash

Mrs J C Welch wife of Rev J C Welch pastor of First Christian church Palestine Texas is in grave condition after an automobile accident on the Hope Texarkana highway. The Rev Welch and three children suffer severe head injuries sprained necks and body abrasions with Mrs Welch having a fractured spine and two broken ribs. All five were taken to Josephine hospital for emergency care and their vehicle left the road plunging into a ditch six miles west of Hope on the way to Palestine after Christmas in Stuttgart Arkansas.

Gibson Celebrates 48th Business Year in Hope

John S. Gibson marked his store’s 48th anniversary in Hope with friends’ congratulations. The business began December 31, 1885, opened by his father Judge A. A. Gibson, and is now run by John and his three sons Carter Seivers and Charles Dana. The firm holds the local Rexall agency, one of Arkansas’ long continuously operating drugstores, with Carter owning a Rexall in San Angelo, Texas.

Reconstruction Finance approves Arkansas loan for 72 counties

The Reconstruction Finance Corporation authorized a 1,424,540 loan to Arkansas covering 72 counties for two months as Governor Parnell cautioned over debt but urged need to avert suffering. In Rison, a Saturday fire destroyed half a block of businesses, including Bule Hardware and Maddox variety store, causing an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 dollars in damage.

Earthquake Rocks Diamond Country

A major quake rattled South Africa's diamond belt on Saturday morning. Natal and other provinces reported cracked houses as four shocks struck the Transvaal region for about one minute forty seconds. The tremor also reached the Orange Free State southern districts, causing panicked evacuations.

Fort Smith Man to Share Big Estate

On his eighty seventh birthday J A McIlvaign of Fort Smith learned he would share in a $3 000 000 New York estate after a court in New York recognized his late wife as a legal heir to banker John Whalen s holdings. Administrator Charles J Jewitt estimates McIlvaign his son Clyde of Helena Ark his daughter Mrs Blanche Oats of Fort Smith and granddaughter Virginia Oats would share about 500 000. The five year fight over the Whalen estate ends with the heirs named. Mrs McIlvaign 87 died recently. she was born in Ireland and was first cousin to John Whalen. McIlvaign once a traveling salesman and retired after a fall.

Roosevelt to Meet Congress Leaders in New York City

Franklin Roosevelt ends his term as New York governor and plans private life before becoming president. A Thursday conference in New York with Democratic leaders, likely at the Hotel Biltmore, will include Speaker Garner and Senators Robinson Byrnes and Harrison among others.
