Elena Shaffer, owner of the mine where 54 men were entombed, expresses optimism for the remaining seven miners as rescuers report seven more bodies found, lifting known dead to 47. A major fire swept the four story Montgomery Ward building on Second Street and a nearby cotton warehouse at 10 PM Wednesday, destroying seven hundred fourteen bales of cotton and causing extensive brick wall damage. Total losses reached about 93000 with owners Hempstead Corporation 50000 Jett Williams Co 25000 E I Rephan New York store 10000 Postal Telegraph 2500 Dr L M Lile 3000 Monts Seed 2000 and J L Green pressing shop 500. A second blaze at E I Rephan’s Store threatened adjacent Ward & Son druggists before being controlled by afternoon Thursday.
Hope Firemen fought the Montgomery Ward fire Wednesday into Thursday to prevent spread through the business district. The blaze consumed 714 bales of cotton and damaged the east wall and adjacent buildings as crews fought from the exterior. Two blocks away, E I Rephan’s New York store caught fire, while Public utilities suffered outages and Hope Star paused before midafternoon. The Hempstead corporation owned the Ward building with 50 000 insurance, plans to rebuild soon.
