Keep State Funds Centralized in City Streets Plan

The plan counters the current turnback idea and favors centralized highway funding managed by the State Highway Department, with streets tied to state aid as the measure of assistance.

Weisenberger Proposes State Takeover of City Streets

Representative Hoyce Weisenberger unveiled a tentative 1941 bill to let the State Highway Department assume maintenance of streets that are highway continuations in first and second class cities. Estimates from Little Rock officials put about 200 miles of such streets with annual upkeep near 300 dollars per 2 miles. The measure would amend Act 65 of 1929 to include portions of roads through incorporated towns, reversing the current exemption for towns of 2,500 or more. A federal inquiry sought by Hempstead County’s representative concluded the change would not constitute highway fund diversion according to a December 11 letter from Thomas MacDonald, U S commissioner of public roads.
