First Earth View From Apollo 8 Flops on Telecast
Space observers report the initial televised Earth view from Apollo 8 failed due to a faulty telephoto lens. The interior shots from 140000 miles showed clearer detail, while the telephoto feed yielded a barely visible lighted port on a dark sea. Commander Borman described the Earth as blue with white clouds as mission control awaited ground assistance. Lamar Cox, Hope High School junior, was chosen to receive the first Joe Amour Service Award.
