Dollar weakness and currency shifts ripple across Europe
The dollar drifted lower in European exchanges while Tokyo closed near the ceiling. West Germany cut its prime rate to spur dollar outflows, Austria and South Africa set new parity rates, and the ruble rate rose amid nonconvertibility. Portugal also adjusted its escudo value as markets moved on dollar reserves and policy signals.

Five in custody as $950,000 holdup loot remains missing
Windsor police search for more suspects after a Royal Bank of Canada raid last Saturday left about $950,000 still missing. A trunk recovered in Toronto failed to hold the full loot. $248,000 was counted. Two men and a 61 year old grandmother were arrested for possession of stolen money, with more arrests in Mississauga for stolen goods. Police believe the four bandits stayed in Windsor the night before and fled after handcuffing 12 employees and the manager in a brief, staged escape. The robbery, committed by men dressed as janitors, lasted 12 minutes.

Penal Farm Issues Raised
District Court Judge G Thomas Fisele said two major constitutional questions remain about the Mississippi County Penal Farm. The issues are whether it is constitutional to use misdemeanants at the farm without paying minimum wage and whether the county can contract with other counties for use of the facility. Oscar Endler of Blytheville, inmate plaintiffs’ attorney, filed the suit alleging unconstitutional conditions. Graham Sudbury, county attorney, warned that inability to contract for misdemeanants from other counties would threaten operation and could force shutdown.
