Devaluation Seen As Part Of Shifting World Trade Order

AP analysis argues that the December 1971 dollar devaluation did not yield a simple win or loss for the United States but reflected a changing international balance. Since Bretton Woods, currencies tied to the dollar, which served as anchor in a world emerging from World War II. As economies evolve, devaluations replace revaluations, signaling a move away from a static peg and toward a new regime where the dollar’s dominance fades as others grow. France and others have devalued since 1944, revealing the overvaluation of the dollar.
