Lucius D. Amerson, a 33 year old Army veteran, is sworn in as Macon County sheriff January 16. He becomes the first Black sheriff in the South since Reconstruction and vows equal, fair treatment for all. Amerson, from a county that is 83 percent Black, defeated white opponents in primaries and the general election. He says citizens must see that Blacks can hold high office and perform with proficiency and dignity.
