The Associated Press reports fair skies and mild temperatures for Saturday in Arkansas with decreasing clouds and cooler highs today. Isolated light rain may affect the northeast, ending this afternoon, followed by fair skies and cold conditions tonight.
New York AP report notes Bill Cosby and Helen Reddy stressing prenatal care on the PBS show Feeling Good. They caution that cravings during pregnancy may be real but safeguarding mother and child requires medical guidance.
Obituary notices report the death of Bynum Franklin Easterling formerly of Hope Texas and Houston death December 19 after a short illness. He is survived by Vera Erwin Easterling a daughter Marjorie Valan five brothers Lile Homer Kinnie Lawrence and Leroy Easterling and two sisters Mabel Wade and Fern Hickey with services at Forrest Park Chapel Houston and burial there. Also noted is the funeral for Betty Ward 49 of Houston who died Tuesday and was buried at Avery's Chapel Cemetery near Nashville. She was born May 5 1925 at McCaskill Ark and survived by her husband John Cecil Ward a son John Ward Jr a daughter Beth Brown and her mother Orilla Farles plus a brother Samuel Farles and other relatives.
FAA investigators probe a light plane crash five miles south of Perryville Missouri that killed two men Robert L. Jones 46 of Ellisville Missouri and Peter Patterson 45 of Dallas Texas. The twin engine Piper Apache owned and piloted by Jones exploded Wednesday evening and crashed in light rain as bodies were recovered after searchers worked through darkness. The two men were en route from Memphis Tennessee to St Louis Missouri. Jones was assistant corporate director of maintenance for Gelco Feld Truck Leasing Corp of St Louis and Patterson served as service manager for the firm’s Atlanta office.
In Charleston West Virginia United Mine Workers members will vote on a new contract after meetings in districts Saturday to explain terms. The pact received approval from the UMW and Associated Bituminous Contractors negotiators and was sent to the bargaining council, which endorsed it. Federal mediators joined talks as construction workers crossed picket lines following a month long strike.
Inmate Alvin Tyger who surrendered to Arkansas authorities last week after living in Tucson is not eligible for a 24 hour Christmas furlough. The Corrections Department said he did not meet eligibility rules requiring one year as a prisoner and six months as a Class 1 inmate. Tyger, 26, previously escaped Cummins Prison Farm six years ago, later married, had a child, and worked as a truck driver before returning to Cummins.
