On again bombing saga stretches back eight years
The Monday resumption of U S bombing over North Vietnam marks another phase in an on again off again policy since the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964. Initial raids targeted coastal bases and oil facilities, with sustained campaigns beginning February 7, 1965, until a halt ordered by President Lyndon B Johnson on May 13, 1965 amid hopes of de escalation.
