Bitter Cold Grips Nation Across Snowbound Regions
Arctic air held firm across the United States from the Rockies to New England with no relief in sight. Western New York endured a crippling snowstorm that stranded hundreds of motorists as schools opened yet travel remained hazardous. The cold and heavy snow, ongoing for a week in the Midwest, is blamed for at least 22 deaths with readings of 35 below in Bemidji Minnesota and 26 below in International Falls. Buffalo recorded 3 below as the storm’s path dumped up to four feet southward, closing schools and delaying traffic on the State Thruway between Buffalo and the state line. Visibility dropped to zero along Lake Erie as convoys guided stranded cars through the night.
