Arkansans Build a Submarine to Study Lake Fish

Thomas O. Duncan and Robert M. Jenkins of the Interior Department’s Fish and Wildlife bureau describe their $10,000, 13-foot submarine. They plan yearlong studies in Bull Shoals Lake and Beaver Reservoir to uncover how fish survive and interact with predators in man-made lakes. The device will be tested as soon as Beaver Reservoir fills, then stored in Harrison during winter. Duncan and Jenkins, Fayetteville residents and biologists, expect to continue research for several years to answer why certain fish thrive in one lake and not another.

They plan a fundraising drive to build him a proper enclosure, raise about 16000 dollars, and stage a backyard circus and art sale to cover costs.
