Testimony Links Bodily Harm to Chowchilla Kidnappers

In Oakland California a judge ruled three of the Chowchilla kidnapping victims suffered bodily harm, allowing a life sentence with no parole for James Schoenfeld Richard Schoenfeld and Fred Woods. The judge cited fainting spells nosebleeds and stomach distress during the 16½ hour ordeal. The defendants admitted kidnapping the six girls and driver Ed Ray but deny harsher charges and await sentencing.

Fire kills 32 at Manila mental hospital

Memphis man charged in connection with theft

A 19 year old Memphis man was taken into custody by Hope authorities Wednesday on suspicion of auto theft and later charged with a Class C felony theft of property in West Memphis Arkansas. He was identified as Jeffrey McFadden and was delivered to West Memphis late Thursday afternoon after being apprehended Wednesday while visiting Hope.

Two People Involved In Minor Auto Accident

Harry Hawthorne aged 7 and Lola Graves aged 30, both of Hope, were in a minor auto collision on Thursday morning near Texas Street and West Fifth. No injuries or charges were filed. Officer Melton reported minimum damage and investigated the incident.

Release expected in Kyprianou kidnapping case

Two supertankers collide and burn off South Africa

In foggy seas off Port Elizabeth two Liberian registered supertankers Venoil and Venpet collided at about 3 a.m. EST, igniting fires and causing a 60 mile oil slick. Dozens jumped overboard, two missing, 82 rescued by helicopter and ships. Venoil carried full oil, Venpet empty. Crews, including Chinese sailors, evacuated. both ships were drifting apart with no imminent sinking danger. The incident, described as a major tanker disaster, raised pollution fears.

Charles S Walker 80 dies. longtime grocery manager

Charles S Walker of 220 N Pine St died Friday in a local hospital at age 80. He was a retired manager of Ritchie Grocery, a First Baptist Church member, and lifelong resident. Survived by wife Pearl of Hope, two nephews and two nieces. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Herndon chapel with Dr Richard Stiltner officiating, burial in Rosa Hill cemetery.
