A Cuban owned freighter crippled by a gunboat attack was being towed toward Cuba after a hostile high seas assault. The captain Jose Villa, 55, sent a final radio message reporting blood on deck and requests for Coast Guard help as deaths were reported aboard.
Bahama Lines reports its ship Johnny Express seized in tow by Cuban patrol boats about 118 miles north of Cuba's east coast. Two American crewmen aboard. the vessel, sister to Lyla Express, was returning from Haiti when attacked near Little Inagua. Coast Guard medics dispatched for a humanitarian mission.
The Price Commission set ceilings on increases for doctors and hospitals with 2.5 percent and 6 percent annual caps respectively. Hospitals may raise prices up to 2.5 percent without notice, higher rises need IRS and Medicare approval. The plan aims to curb inflation while preserving care quality as AMA responds. North Little Rock Police Department handed a 2300 dollar check to Arkansas Children's Colony to buy Christmas gifts for residents. Sgt Earl Bridges presented it to Bill Hoggard, the colony's fiscal officer. Hoggard called it the largest Christmas gift to the colony in memory and possibly ever, noting benefits for residents at Conway, Alexander, and Arkadelphia units.
John Linley Frazier, 24, convicted of five killings at a Santa Cruz hills mansion, was sentenced by an eight-woman, four-man jury to death in the gas chamber after rejecting life imprisonment. The Oct. 19, 1970 shootings killed eye surgeon Dr. Victor Ohta, his wife Virginia, their two sons, and their secretary. The bodies were found in the Ohta residence pool by firefighters responding to a blaze.
Mrs. Audria Stroud, 63, died Wednesday. Funeral at 2 p.m. Friday at Herndon Chapel with burial at Memory Gardens. Survivor: husband W. S. Stroud and siblings. Mrs. Lottie Stephens, 83, of Blevins died Wednesday. Widow of PH Stephens, member of Methodist Church. Services held Thursday at Bruce Memorial Methodist Church with burial at Marlbrook Cemetery.
Charlton Heston will star in the MGM film Airborne to be shot in Los Angeles from a Stanley KH Greenberg screenplay. The project marks Heston’s return to MGM after Ben Hur and the 1959 Academy Award win as best actor, produced by Walter Seltzer.
