Underground coal fires threaten homes in Appalachian region
In Georgetown Pennsylvania and surrounding towns, underground coal fires have forced the evacuation and demolition of nearly 200 houses and shops. Fires burn unseen hundreds of feet below, temperatures exceed 1000 degrees, some started as early as 1915, and the Bureau of Mines is slowly extinguishing and sealing them with flooding or digging.
