New baseball rule widens gulf between players and owners
The Joint rule allowing a player to be placed on the Temporary Inactive List for illness or a non-baseball injury could suspend pay and extend the gap between Major League players and club owners. MLBPA chief Marvin Miller said the players will seek federal court action to enjoin enforcement if the rule is not withdrawn, amid pension talks and an impasse at the bargaining table.

Colts defense rebounds after Unitas loss to chase record
New York dispatch reports Coach Don Shula says the Colts rallied after Johnny Unitas’ injury. Baltimore’s defense clamped down, aiming for one of the NFL’s best marks in the 14-game era. The 12-1 Colts hold the Coastal Division lead as their defense permits few points. Earl Morrell’s backup quarterback play fuels a still dangerous offense, placing Baltimore high in total and passing yards.
