Clio Harper 60 longtime Arkansas Press association secretary and poet laureate died at his Harrison home after two years of ill health. He was buried in Little Rock with services at First Christian church. Harper helped found the Parke-Harper daily service and authored poetry and essays. He served on many state and local boards and was active in journalism and literary groups.
Memphis detectives captured two bandit suspects Pete Calisaris and John Ford and transported them into Arkansas after their arrest. They are held for questioning in the $4000 robbery of a Peoples Bank & Trust messenger in Little Rock. Attorney efforts pursue habeas corpus.
Washington report says house Republican Independents will back President Elect Roosevelt if he maintains support on farm relief. Rep LaGuardia of New York announced a meeting for next Tuesday to inform Roosevelt of the conditional backing.
City officers likely to be voted on in January include mayor treasurer clerk and municipal judge with four aldermen. Death of city recorder Fred Webb requires filling both the treasurer and clerk offices and the council may consider consolidating duties or merging treasurer and clerk roles to save costs.
Norman Thomas, twice Socialist presidential candidate, told the joint committee on unemployment that riots will follow unless Congress funds relief for farmers and workers. He urged balancing the federal budget with higher income and inheritance taxes.
Jonesboro Arkansas reports the unemployment relief committee of Craighead county will fund labor to stucco the Craighead county courthouse while the county provides the materials.
Umpire Owen J. Roberts ruled in favor of Germany in the Black Tom and Kingsland cases, the second and final German victory after new evidence was submitted. The suits concern the destruction of the Lehigh Valley terminal at Jersey City and the Kingsland ammunition plant near Kingsland New Jersey before U S entry into World War I.
The 1916 Black Tom explosion destroyed forties of powder shells and property. A Mixed Claims Commission claim blamed German agents, but in 1930 the commission rejected it, citing a watchman fire's sparks as the cause. The blast imperilled Jersey City and the metropolitan area for a night and day.
Winners of the If I Had a Million letterwriting contest sponsored by the Saenger theater and Hope Star were announced Saturday. First prize is five tickets for Mrs. P. J. Holt of Hope. second prize three tickets to Mrs. W. P. Blackard. third prize two tickets to Evelyn Simpson. Several single tickets awarded to residents of Hope including Anne G Douglas Martha Caroline Houston Herbert Simpson Princess Watson Noble Higgins and Lora Faye Taylor.
Net cash income from the Hope Star circulation department rose again in November compared with the same month last year. For the first eleven months, subscription income increased 24 percent over 1931, the previous banner year, with gains in both mail and carrier subscription receipts.
The 1932 All-America squad lists key players by position from Purdue Notre Dame Army Nebraska Texas Christian California Cornell and more. The Associated Press selects its All-America football team for 1932 with four Midwest players among the first eleven. Cornell’s Jose Martinez-Zorrilla shines as a standout running mate, while Tulane’s Don Zimmerman and Army guard Milton Summer are also honored. Injuries trimmed other contenders, and ends Joe Skladany and Ted Dailey are noted among the candidates.
Hope All-Stars defeated Prescott 2 to 0 at the high school field after a scoreless first three quarters. A fourth quarter blocked punt on Prescott’s 20 yard line resulted in a safety for Hope. The game featured a 55 yard march by Hope on four plays, with Jones and W Cook pivotal on offense.

In Washington on Saturday Representative Milligan predicted more than 150 Democrats would back the flat repeal resolution in the House, stating the measure could pass if Republicans provide about 110 votes. He framed the move as pending the GOP support. Senator McNary warned the repeal effort could become unfinished business in the Senate after Philippine independence legislation is resolved.
Lieut. Gov. Lawrence E. Wilson urged Walter Daugherty to file against the bonding company after a two hour conference on alleged shortages of nearly 21000 in the accounts of three South Arkansas banks. Wilson denied shortages and accused Daugherty of failing to check records while noting the examiner’s $10000 bond. Mrs. Lois Jeffries, Wilson's secretary, attended with reporters.
Dwight Ridgdill, son of John W. Ridgdill, announces his bid for Hope city treasurer in the January 24 primary. A Hope native and Hope High School graduate, he has six years of bookkeeping and auditing experience with Arkansas Bank & Trust Co. and its liquidating agent. He says the office would be kept open at all times, either in the city hall or a nearby business district location.
Fort Smith Arkansas report shows a normal license demand with 609 state licenses sold in Arkansas. Officials note more hunters will go to Oklahoma for hunting, as non resident licenses are issued by Cy Cordell.
