Alleged Slayer's Fate Up to Jury in Clarendon
In Clarendon Cir Circuit Court a first degree murder trial against Marshel Tucker for the slaying of Johnnie Smallwood went to the jury Tuesday night. About 40 witnesses testified, including many women guests at a Halloween dance at Tucker's father's cafe where the shooting occurred. The defense and prosecution diverged on Smallwood's alleged knife possession as a quarrel over a water source sparked the fatal shot from a .44 pistol. The courthouse crowd remained packed through lunch hour awaiting the verdict. Minor cases follow with a $55,000 damage suit against the Austin Bridge Co. likely Thursday.
