County Agent Notes from C Caldwell on area meeting and crop forecasts
County agents report an area meeting at Texarkana with leaders from Miller Lafayette Howard Sevier Little River Columbia and Hempstead counties to discuss county development. Arkansas and national crops show nine million pounds forecast for Arkansas and 279 million pounds nationally, about four times last year’s pecan crop and three times the 1962 Arkansas crop. Soybean production is hampered by pod setting failures linked to temperature and light. flowering requires 10 plus hours of darkness, and pods typically form three to four times the flowers. High air temperatures around 95F reduce pod setting when soil moisture is low, but adequate moisture in southern varieties supports yields. Soil samples are being submitted to the Extension office for fertilizer recommendations before ACP practices approval. sampling tubes are available for loan and reseeding of soil samples is encouraged.
