Hopewell School Superintendent James H. Jones announces bus stops for elementary transfers. Bus No 1 Kurtpatrick at Avenue G and Hazel Heritage Manor Nursing Home. Bus No 2 Coleman at Allen and Hickory. Bus No 4 Higgins at Dorman Grocery on old Hwy 67 near Graham. Bus No 6 Parker at N Laurel and Berry. All buses depart about 7:30 a.m.
U S military sources say enemy forces in Cambodia receive limited supplies from North Vietnam due to intense American air attacks on river routes. The drives uncovered about 60 percent of stockpiled materiel in border base areas in May and June. There is evidence some supplies may return from South Vietnam as action ebbs. Reconnaissance noted 120 bikes moving west from near Saigon, and streams are used to float bags and barrels toward Cambodia. Mines have been placed in streams in the Laotian panhandle.
Hempstead County mirrors state results with Orval Faubus leading but short of a majority. Faubus has 2,076 votes while McLarty and Odom secure a combined 3,938 turnout, forcing a runoff between Griffin and other contenders.
Vice President Spiro Agnew said the United States might withdraw all forces from South Korea within five years after South Korea completes its modernization. He noted it could take five years or more, as he spoke during a multi nation Asian tour after meetings with President Park. The current US troop level is 62,000 with 20,000 set to depart by next June 30.
The 1970-71 term at Red River Vocational Technical School starts Wednesday September 9 at 9:00 a.m. Director J W Rowe announces. The school seeks housing listings for out of town students. Call Mrs Leverett at 777-5722 with available units and expected rent.
Olen Hendrix of Prescott wins the Sun District Arkansas State Senate seat with 10 167 unofficial votes to Dean Murphy 6 630 in four counties Sevier Howard Nevada Hempstead plus a recount in Sevier County There are runoff contests in Nevada County for tax assessor and in Prescott for city mayor plus results for county judge sheriff circuit clerk and municipal judge races. A Negro boycott of Texarkana schools is to begin today led by Miller County Independent Voters over the plan to close Carver School arguing the plan would send black students to white schools while whites would not attend any black schools.
State Rep. Sterling R. Cockrill Jr. won the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor. Dr Bob Riley and James H Harrell faced a Democratic runoff. Riley led with 122,226 votes to Harrells 96,969 as precincts reported.
Henderson notes highlight Hope’n Stan Parris as prime professional prospect at safety. He’s led the Readies with 25 interceptions over three seasons, earned ALL-AIC honors in as many years, and was an all-district all-state player for the Hope Bobcats.
