Cold Front Moves Toward State Raises Showers

A cold front moves southeast toward Arkansas, increasing showers in the northwest this afternoon and tonight. It lies this morning in northwestern Kansas and is not expected to enter the state, with showers confined to the southeastern two thirds.

Weather outlook for Arkansas shows 30 percent rain risk today with 20 to 40 percent tonight across regions and a 40 percent north and 30 percent south chance on Tuesday. Extended outlook calls for scattered thundershowers midweek, then more widely scattered by Thursday and Friday with highs near 90 and lows around 70. Death takes J. A. Collier

Jesse Aubrey Collier Sr. died Sunday in a local hospital at age 82. A Hempstead County native, he helped found Sutton-Collier Livestock Commission and was a retired city employee. Survived by his wife Lillie and children Harrell Bud Collier, J A Collier Jr, and four daughters, plus siblings and many grandchildren. Funeral at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hope Church of Christ, burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Herndon Funeral Home in charge.

Hope Rotary marks centennial with grand tribute

The Hope Rotary Club held a Centennial Celebration at Hope Fair Park Coliseum on Thursday August 21 with over 1000 in attendance for A Century of Hope and Progress. Governor Pryor Judge Harris Congressman Thornton and Mrs Freida Roth Greenan spoke as dolls honored Centennial Executive Committee members.

Mobil oil price controls should end gradually says chairman

Mobil chairman Rawleigh Warner Jr states that ending oil price controls gradually over several years would cushion consumers from higher prices and avoid shocks to the economy. He warns a sudden end could raise prices and possibly cost jobs, and opposes windfall profits taxes if controls end abruptly.

VA office on wheels to visit Hope on Tuesday

The Veterans Administration traveling office will stop in Hope for one day staffed by Veterans Benefits Counselors. They will assist veterans and dependents with medical, education, home loans, pension and other benefits. Location is the City Hall parking lot behind the building from 8 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. on Tuesday August 26. The visit aims to reach veterans not currently using available benefits.

Refugees on welfare receive HEW aid in 25 states

HEW reports 5,303 Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees in 25 states and the District of Columbia receive welfare and medical care. About 9 percent of those resettled as of July 16, with 17,000 more since then. Nearly half, 2,262, live in California.

Henderson State University offerings at Hope include History and Principles of Vocational Education and more. Registration runs 8 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fees are 48 for undergraduates and 60 for graduates. Classes start the week of September 2 with no Labor Day. Little American Miss finals set for September 20

Entries are being accepted for the fourth annual Little American Miss finals on Saturday, September 20 at the Sheraton Chateau Charles in Lake Charles Louisiana. Open to girls aged three through 12, with no talent portion, four age divisions determine division winners and runners up who advance to the national title currently held by Julie Taimer, also of Lake Charles.

Lake search continues for Beaver Lake drowning victim

Rogers Arkansas. A 20 year old man who apparently drowned near Horseshoe Bend at Beaver Lake Sunday sparked a search that resumed today with divers called in to help. He was believed to be attempting to retrieve a boat that drifted away from a picnic area.

Obituaries: Perry G. Taylor and Lillard I. Billingsley

Perry G. Taylor, 75, former Hope resident, died in Dallas early Monday. Funeral services to be announced by Oakcrest Funeral Home. Lillard I. Billingsley, 78, died Friday night in a Texarkana hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Prescott with burial in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Billingsley resident of Prescott, leaves Golda Hendrix Billingsley of Prescott and 3 sons Thomas, Gilbert, John. 4 daughters Mary Moore, Lois McCain, Imogene Turner, Sue Hammons. 1 brother Carl. 1 sister Irene Parker. 18 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren.
