Critical Test Today for Moon Program
America's moon effort faces a key test as Saturn I rockets launch an unmanned Apollo capsule on a 93 minute flight from Cape Kennedy. If successful, the mission paves the way for a December 14 day Earth orbit and a 1968 goal to land men on the moon. NASA officials say a manned flight could come as early as October or December.

Arkansas convict denied whipping excuse in okra case
LITTLE ROCK AP An Arkansas convict denies that blindness caused a prison whipping for missing okra while serving a burglary sentence. The state says eight inmates were lashed but returned to work, with Jackson alone contesting the punishment as cruel and unusual without clear rules. The case tests new whipping rules adopted earlier in the year.
