Red River dam plan to flood Denison area sparks debate
The United States government proposes a 54 million dollar Red River dam near Denison to control floods and generate hydroelectric power. The project would flood about 200000 acres, displacing Hagerman, Preston, Woodville, and Aylase residents and requiring relocation of 64 miles of rail, 28 miles of power lines, and 61 miles of telephone lines. Proponents cite flood protection and energy revenue, while locals fear substantial displacement and extensive infrastructure moves along the Red and Washita rivers.
