Lend-Lease Program Termination Announced by White House

Washington reports official termination of lend-lease operations effective upon receipt of notices by missions. President Truman ordered cancellation of all outstanding contracts unless Allied governments take them over or U S interests warrant completing them. Total nonmunitions and finished goods contracts in the U S approximate two to two and a half billion dollars with another one to one and a half billion tied up abroad. The United States spent about thirty-nine billion dollars on lend-lease operations as it seeks peacetime re conversion of its international trade. The move ends the wartime flow of give-away aid and highlights postwar economic challenges.
