Government Loan Believed Near on 1937 Cotton Crop
Washington Senator Bankhead urged Roosevelt to authorize a government loan of 10 cents a pound on cotton. He argued 10 cents with a 2 cent subsidy benefits both government and farmers, noting farmers would still receive about 12 cent cotton. In New Orleans Norris Williamson of the American Cotton Cooperative Association said a federal price adjustment program for cotton farmers is likely, with plans ranging from a 10-cent loan plus payments to cooperate, to a 10-cent loan with higher farm payments as options.
