Six Percent Mortgages Likely to End This Fall
Federal officials warn that government backed FHA and VA home loans could vanish if Congress does not extend the 7 percent rate suspension beyond October. VA and FHA officials say lenders won t issue 6 percent loans, as the statutory ceiling would return to 6 percent. Mortgage funds are tightening with primary rates at 8 percent for prime borrowers, cutting available government backed money. Senate panel approved a six month extension. House hasn t acted but stopgap renewal is expected before Oct 1 due to popularity of the programs.
