Lumber Split Up by Wage Battle
Washington hearings opened on the retail lumber code with labor proposing a wage scale differing from the National Retail Lumber Dealers association plan. Builders protest inclusion of building materials like bricks in the lumber code. The code sets a 40 hour week with specific exemptions and wage ranges from 25 to 50 cents an hour and 14 to 20 dollars weekly by region. Organized labor seeks a 15 dollar weekly minimum for a 35 hour week in small localities, parity for manual and white collar workers, and the same minimums across classes. Roosevelt took charge to smooth steel code disputes as NRA efforts widen to pull oil, coal, and autos into the Blue Eagle fold. Green denounced steel industry spokesmen for walking out of an NRA conference, arguing the government must set the framework under the Industrial Recovery Act and require industry cooperation.
