The Associated Press reports a cold front moving into northern Arkansas produced light to moderate showers and a few heavy downpours overnight. Northwestern Arkansas measured an inch or more of rain since Thursday as the weather system moved closer.
Hope Star reports a slow moving cold front across Arkansas with scattered showers and warm temperatures. Northern sections see lows near 70 and highs in the upper 80s, while statewide highs reach the upper 80s to lower 90s. station data show 95 and 70 for the last 24 hours.
Vicky D. Hunt of Patmos was charged with failure to yield right of way by Hope Police on Thursday after her westbound pickup stalled at the Spring Hill Road intersection and was struck by a Hempstead County gravel truck driven by Austen Stone. No injuries were reported.
In an interview Fanne Foxe discusses her relationship with Mills, noting they met in 1973 at a nightclub where she worked. She explains Mills moved to Arlington, Virginia, and that her ex husband Eduardo Battistella approved the divorce amid their love. Foxe previews a Las Vegas nightclub act, a film Posse from Heaven with a Washington premiere, and a forthcoming autobiography.
Virgil M. McKee age 88 of Rt. 4 Hope died in a local hospital. Retired farmer and Columbus Baptist Church member. Survived by son David and three daughters, plus a sister, ten grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Services Friday 2:30 p.m. at Herndon Chapel. Burial Memory Gardens. Multimillionaire Edgar Bronfman asks kidnappers to renew contact and provide evidence that his son Samuel Bronfman II remains alive. A tape of the boy's voice was received while officials and the FBI continue efforts at the 150 acre estate in Westchester County. Samuel, a June Williams College graduate, was abducted while driving to his mother’s house after a dinner with his father.
Catherine Hearst will appear in Harrisburg Pennsylvania before a federal grand jury. She says she does not know what questions to expect and will comply with the subpoena. Her husband Randolph Hearst denies money was given to Patricia Hearst and says the family has had no involvement.
Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip postponed their planned October visit to Nigeria. The trip was a reciprocal gesture for Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s state visit to Britain two years earlier, canceled after his coup last month. No new date was set.
The Commerce Department released two balance of payments measures showing a 1.2 billion April June surplus in net liquidity balance, down from a 2.9 billion first quarter surplus, and a 1.6 billion deficit in official reserve transactions, improved from 3.3 billion in Q1. The figures reflect fixed rate era methods and are being studied for revamping. The basic balance figures, considered more meaningful, are due later.
Mr. and Mrs. Rube Johnson, former Hempstead County residents, living in Wichita for 25 years, lost their home and all possessions in a recent fire. Mrs. Johnson, Veltee Cooper, is hospitalized in Wichita for smoke inhalation. Call 777-3228 to donate to the Johnsons.
