Editorial on natatorium project and federal relief funds

The editorial argues for moving ahead with a municipal natatorium using federal loan money for work relief, citing $67,500 allotted to the county and $65,000 spent. It urges permanent, worthwhile projects over weed-cutting and ditch-digging, urging Hope to proceed and noting similar actions in Craighead County and other Arkansas communities. It highlights civic value of a swimming facility and the need to use federal funds for lasting community benefits.

Compromise Plan Lets Part of Farm Aid Withheld

A special committee led by Secretary Wallace and Morgenthau devised a plan to withhold part of benefit payments to indebted cotton and wheat farmers when distributing rewards for cutting production. The proposal, to be reviewed by Roosevelt’s Cabinet Advisory Board, abandons full offset of government sums and allows partial deduction only from farmers able to pay. Administrators move to stabilize prices via minimum fall prices, with talks on cotton price stabilization at 16 cents a pound.
