The Twentieth Century Fund study finds distribution is costly and profits in distribution as a whole are not high. While some firms show strong profits, many distributive businesses barely break even or lose money. in 1934 half of trading and distributing firms posted losses. The result implies high consumer costs reflect wages, rents, maintenance, and services rather than profits, and greater efficiency or reduced luxury costs are needed.
