Old Icebox Claims Three Tots Lives
Chicago AP report details how Leamond Fotwell tied a plastic coated rope on an old icebox on a back porch for his three children aged 3 to 7. The three Hartman children, Cynthia 4 Joseph 5 and Marty 6, died last Friday after climbing into the idle refrigerator. An inquest ruled accidental death, with no evidence why the rope remained and what caused the door to close. The piece notes a long standing child suffocation risk from discarded or idle refrigerators, citing federal push out door laws and state disposal rules, and references historical spikes in deaths and refrigerator sales.
