Bombings and gunfire follow mass protests in Armagh Ireland
Bombs damaged central Armagh and gunfire hit troop patrols as Catholics marked the first anniversary of internment laws. No casualties were reported though a soldier wore a bullet in his flak jacket. In Belfast, riots surged after the capture of IRA leader Martin Meehan, with 2,000 youths attacking troops in Ardoyne and rubber bullets used to disperse them. Meehan’s fate remains undecided as Whitelaw contemplates scaling back internment. Londonderry braces for protests over the Apprentice Boys parade despite cancellation.

Rider end the war riders for Senate vote
A House vote centers on a rider ordering U S forces out of Indochina this year linked to a prisoner release and cease fire In a fight that could sink a $21 billion foreign aid package House leaders including Speaker Carl Albert warn the pullout mandate may doom the aid bill while Morgan says foreign aid continues on an interim basis if troops stay in after the vote The deadline was moved to Dec 31 to stretch past the elections and allow withdrawal The plan would require withdrawal as long as prisoners are returned and a cease fire holds with an exception for protective withdrawal forces
