Miller for Senate Opposes Wage Hour Bill Fearing Dictatorship

Representative John E. B. Miller of Searcy, a flood control advocate, was nominated to oppose Governor Bailey for the U.S. Senate. Miller denounced the Black-Connery wage hour bill as dictatorial, arguing it would put labor and industry in Arkansas under a straight jacket. He cited his record on flood control and water-power initiatives and noted family and early career details. Missouri-born Miller, a lawyer who moved to White County, has served on several committees and helped steer the Miller-Tydings bill through Congress.

6000 Horsepower for Atlantic Plane

Aviation editor Devon Francis reports the upcoming record flight across the Atlantic will use four 1500 horsepower radial engines mounted on the leading edge of a Boeing flying boat. The powerplant, weighing about a ton per horsepower, will burn around 190 to 200 gallons of gasoline per hour, enabling the sea crossing with design advances dating from postwar aviation. The engines, a starfish-shaped radial, push a single main bearing via piston rods attached to a sleeve bearing, reflecting decades of aeronautical engineering progress.

Modern 14-cylinder twins run smoothly with gear reductions, reducing cabin vibration and extending engine life. Drag drops 20 to 35 percent as frontal area decreases. US mean altitude about 2500 feet above sea level, range 44 501 feet up to 276 feet below.
