Monroe Doctrine questioned as outworn policy by committee chair
New Yorkee Be ter Pittman, chairman of the foreign relations committee, announced the Monroe doctrine is outworn. He returned from the London world conference and argued the doctrine’s purpose to prevent European powers from extending control over America is no longer necessary as European intervention in Latin America is negligible. He cited Monroe’s 1823 message, said warnings against colonization remain, but that current European power moves risk little to U.S. interests.
